How do I take care of my tattoo?

Tattoo Aftercare

The aftercare of a new tattoo is extremely important! It only takes a few days of good care, and done properly, the tattoo will heal fine and remain attractive. After 2 hours wash your hands and remove the bandage. If the dressing sticks to the skin wet it with lukewarm water. Wash your new tattoo with a mild fragrance free soap and rinse thoroughly. Only wash area with bare hands. Washcloths and sponges are not recommended. Dry the wet tattoo by patting with a new paper towel. Massage a small amount of mild fragrance free moisturizing lotion into your tattoo. It should not scab but will develop a layer of dry skin. Follow the above instructions at least three times daily until the layer falls off (typically two weeks). Ointments like Petroleum Jelly or Neosporin are not recommended for tattoos. A tattoo needs to be exposed to air to breathe. After the initial healing is complete keep it moist by applying a mild moisturizing lotion until your skin returns to normal. Healing tattoos tend to itch, just moisturize it and that will help.

Important: A healing tattoo should not be submerged or soaked in water. Any scabs that may appear should be left to fall of naturally. There is no need to re-bandage

Any clothing that touches a new tattoo should be clean and soft. It may be necessary to wear protective clothing if you will be exposed to grease, oils, dirt, metals, dust, ect. If the tattoo becomes infected (due to poor aftercare) contact your physician to get treatment. Exposure to sunlight at any stage will degrade a tattoo and make it fade. Sun block of an SPF 30 or higher should be used any time the tattoo will be exposed to the sun. Remember: Your tattoo is your responsibility once you leave Studio 42 and it is worth the time to take good care of.

How do i take care of my piercing?

Piercing Aftercare

The instructions contained herein are not given as medical advice. These are common sense instructions based on practical experience. If medical advice is needed, consult a physician.

The healing time for newly installed body jewelry varies between persons. The depth of the jewelry, its location on the body, the pressure of clothing, and daily activities also affect healing.                       Personal cleanliness is most important during the healing process.

The area of installation does not need to be covered during bathing or showering. Twice daily the piercing should be cleansed with a mild fragrance free soap. Then gently rotated. Otherwise don’t touch it.      There are no ointments recommended for a healing piercing. Bactine or Saline Solution, (the kind used for contact lenses) can be used in between cleanings.

The tongue and areas around the mouth are different than most or all other piercings. It is extremely important to rinse the mouth every time anything other than water comes in contact with it, even fingers and cigarettes. Use a 50/50 solution of water and Listerine for this, and full strength twice daily. Listerine is the only recommended mouthwash to be used. Regular oral hygiene should still be in practice. Otherwise keep it and all other piercings clean.

I was curious if you guys also do custom artwork other than tattooing?
Everything depends on the art requested. Whether it’s a drawing, painting sculpture or even a computer generated image. We all have specific styles of tattooing and, everyone here has a particular medium that we like to work in other than tattooing. So stop in and we will discuss what you want.
How much does a tattoo cost?
Pricing is not a standard set amount; there are many factors that go into calculating prices. The final price is usually set after all the details have been ironed out, exact size, style, placement, look, color, and time involved, to produce such work. Cost can only be factored after the artist has designed or looked over the artwork. The shop minimum is $60.00 and large multi stage artwork is priced at $275.00 per session.
What is a Session?
Every tattoo service is defined in sessions. From the moment you sign your paperwork till you leave the studio. So a small tattoo that takes a half an hour is considered a ½ hour session. These smaller single session tattoos are subject to a by the piece pricing. Tattoos that exceed the single session timeframe fall into a category of Multi Stage or Multi Session work. A full session is any where between 2 and 4 hours, sometimes more.
Hi I was just wondering how much a tattoo could cost. I was going to get a ______ or something on my ______ or on my _______. I was also wondering if I had a design in mind could you guys’ work with that or not?
We can do just about anything within reason. Stop down so we can figure out the design. Bring any reference or inspiration you have we also have examples of designs at the shop. Once we get a design nailed down we will be better equipped to give you a price and an appointment. We will work with you to get the tattoo you want and should have.
What is your policy on touchups for your work? I heard that touchups are free.

Touchups are never free. In the end the “free touchup” always ends up costing the artist. People have a tendency to abuse the term “FREE” let alone “Touchup”. Some tattooing will involve a Follow-up session to tighten things that may have not settled well during the healing process. Usually your artist will let you know before you leave if they feel that you may need a follow up.

Depending on the reason for the touchup there may be a fee. If the tattoo was damaged due to negligence during the healing process there will be a fee. If it has a minor blemish that can wait till you get your next tattoo, it would be best to hold off until then. If the tattoo is poorly done not well executed and looks bad, then you did not get it from us and we will be happy to fix it at our regular shop pricing. Stop down and we will take a look and see what category you fall under we will advise you to the best option so you are not charged anything more than is required.
Appointment policy?

Walk-ins are welcome on a first come first serve basis.

Availability is dependent on the artwork.

Appointments are set in person with 50% non-refundable deposit that goes toward the cost of the service. If you show up late for you appointment, after 15 minutes there will be a $25.00 rescheduling fee, after 1 hour, or more, you will forfeit the entire deposit, and be subject to the $25.00 rescheduling fee. If you do not show up for your appointment you will forfeit the entire Deposit. If you cancel your appointment without rescheduling you will forfeit the entire deposit.

Rescheduling and Alterations can be made 24 hours ahead of time without any penalties. Any changes should be done in person or over the phone only. Sorry no voice mail or e-mail. If you fail to notify us of any changes within 24 hours you can incur a $25.00 rescheduling fee.

If you are coming in to set up appointments for large work, please call the shop first (724.846.5002) to schedule a consultation. This will insure that the artist you want will have time set aside to talk to you about your design, measure the area, answer questions, and estimate the number of appointments necessary. Please bring any reference with you at that time.

On the day of your appointment you will be required to pay the balance and fill out some paperwork before getting your tattoo. So please, get there early.
What is a Design Request?

A Custom Design Request is a form we fill out during a brief interview, to better enable our artists in giving you the custom tattoo that you want.

Here is how it works.

You’ll need to come in put $20 down and fill out the design request paperwork. At that time you will be scheduled a date to come back and review your artwork. Usually it will be ready in a week or two. After you a have had a chance to look over your design you can either approve or make changes to the design. If you approve you can then make your appointment according to our normal appointment policy. If you make changes to the design then we will gather more info and make the appropriate adjustments. Sometimes they can be made on the spot, but if not we will be able to give you a new date to review the design.
Does my $20.00 design request go towards the tattoo I want?
Yes of course it does. But A 50% deposit is still required to make an appointment. Your $20 design request will be put towards that initial 1/2 down.
Do you tattoo / pierce minors.

We cannot perform any services on persons under the age of 16, NO EXCEPTIONS.

For persons ages 16&17 we require a Photo ID of the minor (Drivers license, State ID, School ID Or current year book,) and a Birth certificate. Your Parent must have a Photo ID and be listed on your birth certificate. In the case of Guardians we need Guardianship paperwork as well as a Photo ID.  The parent or Guardian must be present to sign paperwork and approve the design. This is the law not only our shop policy.
Do you do micro dermal anchoring, tongue splitting, scarification or amputations?
Sorry we do not offer those as services here at Studio 42.  It is not a common enough request in our area. To have on hand all the equipment necessary would not be cost effective for all parties involved. Some of these are medical procedures, and require surgery to reverse. I would try Pittsburgh. The bigger the city, the more likely you will find someone who is willing and knowledgeable and can direct you to the safest means of acquiring the modification you want.
