how should I care for my fresh tattoo?

This is our general tattoo aftercare instructions. Bear in mind that each tattoo as well as each person is different and requires individual care. It is best to follow the instructions your artist has given you. These instructions are not medical advice but based on common sense and practical experience. If you think your tattoo has become infected, consult your physician immediately. The aftercare of a new tattoo is extremely important! It only takes a few days of good care, and if done properly, the tattoo will come out looking great. Wait 1 hour after your tattoo is finished to remove the bandage we applied. If it sticks to the tattoo, run clean water over the bandage until it loosens and then carefully remove. There is no need to re-bandage your tattoo. Wash your new tattoo with a scent/dye free soap such as Dial. Wash cloths are too harsh and could damage a new tattoo, just use your fingertips. Pat dry with a clean paper towel and apply a thin layer of ointment to the tattooed area. We recommend Aquaphor, Bacitracin, or any tattoo specific ointments. Do not use Neosporin or Vaseline. Continue to wash and apply ointment in this manner 3-5 times a day for 3 days. After 3 days, continue to wash your tattoo throughout the day, applying a dye/scent free moisturizing lotion, such as Aveeno or Lubriderm. Keep using the lotion until the tattoo is fully healed and the skin texture is back to normal. **Always wash your hands before caring for your tattoo. **Be very careful not to oversaturate your new tattoo with ointment. Like any healing wound, it needs to “breathe.” Only apply just enough ointment to keep it from feeling dry and tight. If your tattoo starts to look pitted, you’re using too much ointment, and if it forms thick scabs, not enough. **The tattoo should heal like a sunburn, with a thin layer of dead skin that flakes off. It should not scab. If scabs do form, they should be left alone to fall off naturally. A bare spot can occur if picked or scratched at. Healing tattoos tend to itch, but a quick slap to the area will bring relief. **A healing tattoo should not be submerged or excessively soaked with water. Showering is fine, do not soak in the tub, and no swimming for at least 2 weeks. **Do not expose a healing tattoo to direct sunlight. Apply sunscreen throughout the life of the tattoo to keep it looking good. Exposure to sunlight will degrade a tattoo and cause it to fade. **If you will be exposed to dirt, grease, dust, etc. while your tattoo is healing, protective clothing may need to be worn. Any clothing that touches a new tattoo should be clean, soft and loose. Your tattoo is your responsibility once you leave Studio 42. Isn’t a work of art worth taking good care of?

DO you guys do custom artwork other than tattoos?

YES! We all work in other mediums besides tattooing, and some of us specialize in some mediums more than others, so it depends on what kind of artwork you had in mind. Most of the artwork we have hanging in the shop is done by our artists. Stop in and we can discuss your project.

How much does a tattoo cost?

Pricing is not a standard set amount; there are many factors that go into calculating prices. Things like exact size, placement, color, and style will determine the time needed to finish a piece. Final cost will be determined by your artist after all these factors have been considered. The shop minimum is $60.00, our hourly rate is $125.00. We typically schedule appointments in increments of 1, 3, or 6 hours.

What is a Session?

Every tattoo service is defined in sessions, from the moment you begin your paperwork until you leave the studio. A small tattoo that takes less than an hour is considered a single session. These smaller, single-session tattoos are priced by the piece. Tattoos that exceed the single-session timeframe fall into the category of multi-session work. Half-day sessions are 3 hours, whole day sessions are 6 hours. Extra time is scheduled for all sessions to leave room for paperwork, breaks, and the unexpected.

I have a design in mind. Can you work with that?

Yes, we can do just about anything… within reason. It's best to bring your design in with any other references or inspiration pieces so we can understand what you're thinking. You can find more ideas from the designs we have at the shop. If needed, we will schedule a design request so the artist of your choice has all your information and ideas to render a design for you.

What is a Design Request?

When asked to do custom work, we will ask you specific questions to fully understand what you want designed. We'll also take tracings and pictures of the area you want tattooed. This is to help the artist of your choice best design your unique idea, explicitly drawn to fit you. A non-refundable deposit is required for each drawing, which goes towards the final cost of your tattoo.

What is your policy on touch-ups for your work? I heard that touch-ups are free.

Depending on the reason for the touch-up, there may be a fee. There will be a fee if the tattoo is damaged due to negligence during the healing process. If it has a minor blemish that can wait until you get your next tattoo, it would be best to wait until then. Some tattooing will involve a follow-up session for areas that may not have settled well during the healing process. Usually, your artist will let you know before you leave if they feel you need a follow-up. If the tattoo is poorly done or poorly executed and looks terrible, then you did not get it from us, and we will be happy to fix it at our regular shop pricing.

What is your appointment policy?

This also applies to making changes to your tattoo design. **You must speak to one of our staff directly by phone or in person during our regular business hours. How do I take care of my fresh piercing?

These instructions are not medical advice but are based on common sense and practical experience. If you think your piercing has become infected, consult your physician immediately! Personal cleanliness is most important during the healing process. Following these instructions, your piercing should have a suitable healing environment. The piercer may give you more in-depth instructions for your piercing at installation, so listen up! Important! First, wash your hands, even if you think they're clean. Cause they're not. Body Piercings: Piercings should be maintained twice daily. It is usual for the piercing to get "crusties" at its openings around the jewelry. Gently remove this debris with warm, clean water, then wash the piercing with a mild, fragrance-free soap. The jewelry can be rotated with soap suds on the area and rotated again with just clean water to cleanse the piercing inside. Please don't be too aggressive with your cleaning routine; it could damage the new skin growing internally. Oral Piercings: For any piercing in or around the mouth (tongue, lips, etc.), rinse twice daily with full-strength Listerine. Throughout the day, if you consume anything other than water, including smoking, it is necessary to rinse with a 50/50 solution of water and Listerine. We recommend carrying a bottle of your favorite drinking water, half full of equal amounts of Listerine and water, with you daily. Don't forget your regular oral hygiene. For piercings inside and outside the mouth, follow the body piercing instructions for the areas outside the mouth. Cleaning is the only time you should be touching an unhealed piercing!! **Ointments are not recommended to heal a piercing. **The average wait time for a fresh piercing before changing the jewelry to something more stylish is 4 weeks. Remember, new, delicate skin is still forming inside your healing piercing, so frequently changing the jewelry is not recommended for a few more months. **It is usual for any piercing to take up to a year to fully heal. Once you leave Studio 42, your piercing is your responsibility, and taking good care of it is worth the effort.

Do you have gift cards?

Yes. We have gift cards.

Can I set up my appointment via the Internet?

The short answer is "kind of." While it is always easier and more efficient for everyone involved to set things up in person, we realize that many people have impossible schedules, and many of our clients honor us by traveling great distances to work with us. With these in mind, we can accommodate you via email and phone. Alternatively, if you cannot make it into our shop to schedule an appointment and know how long you need to complete your project, you can schedule a session via phone. Sessions are 1, 3, or 6 hours long and must be paid in full at the time of scheduling; they are non-refundable. We hope to hear from you soon.
